Episode #10: Polaris & the Pedagogy of Play

Tuesday, March 31st, 2009

In “The Pedagogy of Play: Bite-Sized Pieces” (I, II, III), Willem discussed some ways to use warm-up games to teach mechanics and setting, using Ben Lehman’s game, Polaris, to illustrate. In our last episode, we took a crack at it. Since then, Willem tried it at GameStorm, while I finally got together a face-to-face storyjamming circle in Pittsburgh, and started with this. So now, we got on Skype to compare notes and see how it all went.

Episode #9: Experimenting with Polaris

Wednesday, March 18th, 2009

Willem couldn’t make it this time, so we tried Ben Lehman’s Polaris, using the approach Willem outlined in his series on The College of Mythic Cartography, “The Pedagogy of Play: Bite-Sized Pieces” (Parts 1, 2 & 3). We only got as far as level 3.2, but I think it went pretty well for a first spin. I’d like to try a whole campaign like this sometime—maybe after we finish “Howl of the People.”
